Interview with Anand-Milind ji

What are the elements you consider the soul of your compositions?
Anand: Primarily, it’s everlasting melody. It’s still music from the golden era that’s popular for its melodic structure and good lyrics… lyrics that the common man appreciates. Melody makes any song immortal. I learnt the keyboard and Milind the
guitar… we have the knowledge to present good orchestrations. Personally, I’m fond of different types

of rhythms.
How do you separate work among yourselves?
********* Anand: Both of us are good composers and have sound knowledge of arrangement. We both compose and demonstrate songs before producers. Say, for a project Milind and I compose two or three songs each. The selection of a song depends on the filmmaker. After the selection is done, we work on the arrangement.
********************
Anand: I am very fond of Indian instruments like the flute. In our music the flute has been used in various ways. I would say that the flute has played a key factor in our music. Besides the flute, sitar, violin, saxophone, and the trumpet have been used. Fortunately we had the opportunity to work with legendary musicians like Manohari Singh, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Kersi Lord, Viju Shah and assistants like Prakash Verma, Anil Mohile.
********************
Within a very short span you composed for umpteen films and then there was a long gap…
*********************
Anand: Till 2000 it was fine. Soon after trends in the film industry started changing. A new group of filmmakers arrived with new thoughts and that didn’t go with our taste. There was less scope to provide melodious tunes. That made us to give up many projects and we decided to travel and spend time with the family.
********************
Some of the films that make you feel proud...
**********************
Anand: There are many. . . but I should mention Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil, Baghi, Vansh, Beta, Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka, Anjaam, Anari, Yaad Rakhegi Duniya, Hero No.1…
